If your pet suffers an emergency illness or injury, rest assured that we are able to provide rapid pain relief, diagnosis, and treatment for them. All of our vets and many of our nurses have worked in afterhours or emergency clinics in the past (and some still do!), so we have broad experience in managing animal emergencies with efficiency, calmness and kindness.

What is an emergency?

An emergency can involve:

• a significant injury, e.g.:
• a wound that is dripping blood
• a suspected broken bone
• if your animal is suddenly unable to get up and walk
• if you suspect your animal has been hit by a car or had a significant fall
• if your animal seems in significant pain for unknown reasons
• if your animal has recently eaten a known toxin – common examples include:
• chocolate
• coffee beans
• raisins/sultanas/grapes
• snailbait
• ratbait
• onion/garlic
• foods containing the sweetener xylitol
• mouldy foods
• human medications such as Nurofen or Panadol
• macadamia nuts
• if your animal seems weak or poorly responsive
• if your animal has collapsed
• if your animal is having seizures
• if your animal is having difficulty breathing
• if your animal has been unable to eat or drink for more than 8 hours (or more than 4 hours in a puppy, kitten or rabbit)
• if your animal is straining to pass faeces or urine
• if your animal is having profuse vomiting or bloody diarrhoea
• if your pregnant animal is having unexpected bleeding, unwellness, or unproductive straining for more than 1 hour
